If we follow the sensible precautions MRI scan is considered as one of the lowest risk procedure.Your doctor should always prescribe the MRI scan when there are more benefits and the benefits outweigh the possible disadvantage.
Risk Of MRI
ADVANTAGES OR BENEFITS OF MRI SCAN.
MRI scan is considered as an important tool that radiologist uses to find out the sign, symptoms and pathology of the disease. It appears to be very helpful for the diagnoses of disease or injury.Although the diagnoses of the disease usually required more than one test but an MRI scan is used as a supplement it cannot be replaced by any other test.
- is non-invasive.
- does not work on the principles of x-rays, therefore, it is not harmful to pregnant women and children.
- gave detailed diagnostic images of important organs and tissues.
- provide unique information that other tests are unable to provide.
RISK OF MRI SCAN.
RISK Of MRI THAT ASSOCIATED WITH CONTRAST MATERIAL.
Iodinated contrast agents are used in computed tomography but in MRI gadolinium chelate is used as a contrast material which is iodine free and chances of contrast reaction – ( such as nausea, flushing, dizziness, hives) is rare as compared to iodinated contrast. Severe reaction such as
- SOB (shortness of breath).
- Swelling of mouth and lips.Out of 10,000 patients who has given gadolinium only 1 to 2 patients suffer from contrast reaction.
It is necessary to inform your Radiologist and technologist about the previous history of any contrast or allergic reaction.patient should also tell Radiologist all the medicine he or she is taking before the MRI scan.
It is also mandatory to check the patient creatinine level before the administration of contrast material as in patients with impaired renal function administration of contrast material can cause a condition called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH METAL OBJECTS.
MRI is considered one of the safest procedure providing you do not have metal implants or object to you that must not go into the scanner.
The magnetic field produced during the scan and the scanner attracts the metallic objects towards it that,s why instructions are given by the technologist to remove all your belongings containing metal objects such as jewelry, watch, cell phone, credit card etc.
The magnetic field produced during a scan can also pull any metal that is implanted in your body. It causes the cochlear implant, defibrillation devices and heart pacemaker to malfunction.
Many new medical implants are now introduced that is MRI compatible, so when your radiologist know the exact nature of implant he will be able to tell It’s safe or not.If you have implants that is not MRI compatible your radiologist would suggest another scan.
RISK ASSOCIATED WITH SEDATION OR GENERAL ANESTHESIA.
Children under a 5-6 year of age and neonates require a little amount of anesthesia before an MRI scan.-Anesthesia is required because it is difficult for the younger children to stay still for such a long time period. And it will also difficult for the technologist to take good quality images-If anesthesia is required during MRI scan on practice radiologist should discuss the whole procedure with patient attendants and also tell the risks and benefits of the procedure.
Adult patients who are in extreme pain or agitated that it would be difficult for them to stay quiet for a long time period during the scan may require general anesthesia.
The Claustrophobic and anxious patient also sometimes require sedation. It will make you calm but not completely sleepy which happens when general anesthesia is given to the patient.
If sedation is given to the patient during scan he or she may feel drowsy for the whole day and will not be able to operate any machinery or drive.
