MRI VS CT SCAN WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR BRAIN IMAGING

MRI VS CT SCAN: Neuroimaging is a process of obtaining images of the brain through Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) or Computed Tomography (CT) scans.Although the physical dynamics of these two methods appear to be quite similar but they vary in many ways.In both processes, the patient being placed on his or her back and then inserted into a large machine. However, the principle of technology in both modalities and the information provided by the both machines are quite different.

Advantages Of  CT Brain.

  •  During the examination, CT is less sensitive to patient motion. because the imaging can be performed much more rapidly.
  • CT may be easier to perform in very heavy or claustrophobic patients.
  • CT allows accurate detection of metal foreign bodies and calcification.
  • CT is much faster than MRI, making it the study of choice in cases of acute neurological emergencies and trauma.
  • CT can be obtained at considerably less cost than MRI and is sufficient to exclude many neurological disorders
  • CT provides detailed evaluation of cortical bone
  • CT can be performed at no risk to the patient with implantable medical devices, such as nerve stimulators,  ferromagnetic vascular clips, and cardiac pacemakers.

Advantages Of MRI Brain.

  • MRI does not use ionizing radiation and is thus preferred over CT in children, pregnant females, and patients requiring multiple imaging examinations.
  • MRI contrast agents have a considerably smaller risk of causing a potentially lethal allergic reaction as compared with CT contrast which has a more adverse effect such as flushing, vomiting, nausea.
  • MRI allows the evaluation of structures that may be obscured by artifacts from a bone in CT images.
  • MRI has a much greater range of available soft tissue contrast,  more sensitive, depicts anatomy in greater detail,  and specific for abnormalities within the brain itself.
  • MRI scanning can be performed in any imaging plane without moving the patient physically.

MRI VS CT Scan Which Is Better?

There is not absolute worse or better, in term of MRI VS CT Scan. Each has its own particular uses, merits, and limitations.Always discuss all health concerns and allergies with your Radiologist so that they can advice you on whether a brain imaging process in necessary and what imaging modality may be best for you depending upon the signs and symptoms.
